Fire-Resistant Materials

Roof: Metal, tile, or Class A shingles
Siding: Fiber-cement, stucco, or fire-resistant material
Decks: Fire-resistant or treated wood
Windows/Doors: Double-pane or tempered glass; fire-rated doors
Seal gaps around vents, eaves, and crawl spaces

Defensible Space

Zone 1 (0–5 ft): Keep lean, clean, green; remove debris
Zone 2 (5–30 ft): Space trees/shrubs, prune lower branches, remove dead plants
Zone 3 (30–100+ ft): Thin trees/brush, remove ladder fuels

Access & Firefighting

Clear driveways and roads for fire crews
Fire-resistant fencing
Maintain water supply (pond, pool, cistern)
Keep hoses and pumps ready

Landscaping & Outdoor Safety

Use low-flammability plants
Remove dry leaves and pine needles regularly
Rock/gravel barriers near home
Keep vegetation hydrated

Community & Emergency Planning

Coordinate WUI safety zones with neighbors
Have an evacuation plan & fire kit
